Let's dispel a myth or two..... about Thermal Transfer Ribbons for new applications

What is a "Super Premium Ribbon (SPR)"? When is a SPR better to use than a PR? We all get caught up in the art of marketing and promotion, often at the expense of solving our customers' problems. We had an application a couple of years ago for a bar code label to be used on a circuit board, which had to withstand a new environmentally friendly cleaner as part of the process. Labels printed with each of many premium and SPR ribbons failed to survive this chemical attack. One of our lab technicians, against my "experienced" opinion, tried a lowly wax ribbon.as you already suspected, it worked very well. Since there are so many unknown variables in many manufacturing operations, how can we prejudge the outcome of a new application, based on a prejudice formed from marketing jargon? Since that time, my answer has become.. "whatever works for that application"  IS the premium ribbon.

For more information, visit Polyonics Label FAQs ...look specifically at Question #2 Also, contact Tech Service at Industrial Applications for Thermal Printing and ask for the "Industrial Printing/Thermal Transfer" White paper. We will immediately email it to you in pdf format.

          An "INFO-centric" Website

Our website mission is to offer a true website, rich in Potentially Useful Information (or "PUI"...yet another acronym for the "new economy"), technical contant, hence  "INFO-centric", e.g. loaded with technical information, to help you or your engineering staff come up with solutions to requirements you have for identification. To that end we are constantly expanding the FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) section of our website. We expect it to become a teaching center as well as a Q&A resource, since we will include "programmed questions" which will guide the user through a self-teaching process. The first one under development is "How do I go about Specifying a Label for my Harsh Environment Application". We hope to have it completed by the next newsletter in June. To check out the FAQs page, click on Harsh Environment FAQs.

We have also amassed over 1300 AutoID industry-related links with companies who offer products and services to the industrial marking/harsh environment world. You're welcome to take a look at AutoID Industry Links. We hope it is useful. Please send your comments and suggestions to Label Interfaces Comments.

In the next issue:

What is the "lead free initiative" all about for electronics manufacturers ?

The "global greening" movement has reached into manufacturing sectors.there are many implications for the electronics industry.
