About Ribbons

All of Polyonics pressure sensitive label materials are thermal transfer printable, though it should be understood that all ribbons are not created equal.

Test, test, test! The importance of material qualification prior to use in an application is absolutely essential to your success. Matching a thermal transfer ribbon, coating chemistry and adhesive for the specified environment is critical. Our laboratory conducts extensive print testing (up to 10-15 different ribbons) on each individual topcoat. Each of the printed label samples are then subjected to as many as twenty different chemicals, fluxes, cleaners, saponifiers & degreasers before a ribbon and substrate combination is recommended for an application. Industry specific chemicals such as hydraulic fluid, transmission fluid, fuel and the like are included as needed. Whenever possible, 2 or 3 different thermal transfer printers are used with identical sets of ribbon and substrate to evaluate any differences in performance, based on specific printer. Below and to the right is an example of an ideal ribbon profile which has passed all the chemical testing it was exposed to. About thermal transfer ribbons.

  • For successful performance in industrial applications, it must be matched with the appropriate thermal transfer printable topcoat
  • Heat from the print head transfers ink from the ribbon onto surface of the substrate
  • Most ribbons are monochromatic black; however, some additional colors are available
  • There are three different classifications of ribbon: wax, wax/resin blend, and resin. Different ribbons may give different results, for each label substrate chosen. For details see the Ribbon Directory.

Wax

Most widely used for shipping, distribution and product ID labels.  Different formulations are available depending on specific requirements; wax ribbons are formulated in general purpose and low melting point for high speed printing. Best results on matte surfaces.

  1. Cost effective
  2. Soft ribbon
  3. General, all-purpose useage

Wax/Resin combination

For labels that require increased scratch and smudge resistance.  When used in combination with synthetic label stock this ribbon will produce a label that is resistant to moisture and UV light. This type of label can stand up to exposure to rain, sun & cold.

  1. Cost effective
  2. Improved abrasion resistance
  3. Better chemical resistance than wax

Resin

Ideal for applications that require images to stand up to continuous use in factories and distribution centers.  Resin ribbons offer extreme durability against solvents and abrasion.

  1. Long term durability-better abrasion resistance
  2. High temperature resistance
  3. Easy to print
  4. Enhanced chemical resistance
