Polyimide labels (kapton label) materials with specific
chemical resistance for military electronics
MIL-STD
202F, Notice 12, Method 215J prescribes a chemical wash testing
procedure for electronics components, both by soaking, and by rubbing
with a toothbrush to test abrasion resistance. Originally four solvents
were employed. The global ban on TCE (1,1,1 Trichloroethane), necessitated
its removal from the procedure, so now only three chemicals are
used:
1.
Solvent A 1 part IPA (iso-propyl alcohol), and 3 parts Mineral Spirits;
2. Solvent B TCE Discontinued per Notice 12
3. Solvent C Terpene Defluxer
4. Solvent D Saponifier

The
table below lists the Polyonics THERMOGARD™ polyimide label
products which pass this MIL-STD. In all cases, Dai Nippon R 510
ribbon was used. Other ribbons did not perform as well.
