Q: |
What is ASTM and what do the references; ASTM D1000, D3330 & D2979 mean? |
A: |
ASTM stands for American Society for Testing and Materials… they are an organization that tests materials to certain standards and requirements. The numbers ASTM D1000, D3330 & D2979 are nothing more than the standard numbers assigned to a particular test. Think of ASTM as something similar to UL.
ASTM D1000- is the standard that governs Pressure-Sensitive Adhesive Coated Tapes used for Electrical and Electronic Applications and Material Thickness. ASTM D3330- is the standard that governs Peel Adhesion for Pressure-Sensitive Tape. These test methods cover the measurement of the peel adhesion of pressure-sensitive tapes. Test Method A gives a measure of the adherence, when peeled at a 180° angel, to a standard panel or to other surface of interest for a single coated tape. ASTM D2979- Governs Pressure Sensitive Tack of Adhesives. This test method covers measurement of the pressure-sensitive tack of adhesives. This test method is applicable to those adhesives which form a bond of measurable strength rapidly upon contact with another surface and which can be removed from that surface cleanly, that is, without leaving a residue visible to the eye. |
