Harsh Environment Labels and Military Standards FAQ's

QUESTION #1: What is the LOGMARS program for the USDOD (also known a Mil-STD 129 and MIL-STD-1189)?
Answer:In 1982, the USDOD mandated that all supplier to the Department of Defense must use CODE 39 barcode labels. MIL-STD 129 defines the precise requirements of CODE 39, taken from the well-defined ANSI standards. MIL-STD 1189 discusses in depth how and where the labels are to be placed on shipping containers, outer pack, inner pack, and unit packaging. IMPORTANT! See also Question #2 below.

QUESTION #2: What is MIL-PRF-61002 all about?
Answer: This is a military standard which is very common sense...the labels used for the LOGMARS program (the US DOD barcode initiative, MIL-STD 129, and -1189) must be useable for the intended application. For example, for out door exposure you must use a laminated label or approved plastic label; for high temperatures, a suitable polyimide label or kapton label. For details, click on MIL-PRF 61002

Question #3: Do these military standards cover ESD label issues?.
YES.All unit packs and intermediate and exterior contains of ESD sensitive devices (or other electronic items that are alone or are part of assemblies) that are susceptible to damage from ESD shall be marked in accordance with MIL-STD-129, paragraphs 5.2.17.1, 5.2.17.2, and Figure 10. Listed below are the different types of ESD labels required:

There are two diffent types of ESD labels and three different label sizes for specific types of containers.

1. Unit Pack Symbol/Label: All unit packs shall be marked with the ESD sensitive device attention label prescribed by ASTM D 5445. The label shall include the ESD sensitive device symbol (triangle and reaching hand), the words 'ATTENTION STATIC SENSITIVE DEVICES' and the statement 'HANDLE ONLY AT STATIC SAFE WORK STATIONS.' The symbol and lettering on the label shall be marked in black on a yellow background. Unit packs that are not overpacked and are used as exterior containers shall be marked with the unit pack label.

2. Intermediate and Exterior Container Label: Intermediate and exterior containers shall be marked with the ESD sensitive devices attention label. The ESD sensitive devices symbol and the words 'ATTENTION OBSERVE PRECAUTIONS FOR HANDLING ELECTROSTATIC DISCHARGE SENSITIVE DEVICES' shall be marked in black on a yellow background. One 2-inch by 2-inch label shall be placed on the identification-marked side of an intermediate container.

Two 4-inch by 4-inch labels shall be placed on each exterior container that exceeds one-half cubic foot. One label shall be placed on the identification-marked side (or surface), and one label shall be placed on the opposite side (or surface).

Smaller exterior containers shall be marked in the same manner except that the 2-inch by 2-inch label may be used in lieu of the larger label.

If the label is temporarily unavailable, intermediate and and exterior containers shall be marked with ESD sensitive devices symbol and the information printed on the label in figure 11. The minimum size of the symbol shall be five-eigths of an inch measured vertically at the base of the triangle. When preprinted labels are not used, the symbol shall be printed in black or the same color as the identification markings, if other than black.
